Diseases of an ear, throat, nose

Otolaryngology – the section of clinical medicine studying physiology and pathology of a throat, nose, ear and anatomic areas, adjacent to them, and also developing methods of prevention, diagnostics and treatment of diseases of these bodies. Otolaryngologists or ENT specialists (laringootorinolog) are engaged in treatment of pathology of a throat, nose and ear. The anatomic proximity and functional interrelation of ENT organs with each other caused association of their diseases in one field of medical science.

The fields of otolaryngology are the audiology studying a hearing disorder (relative deafness, deafness) and the foniatriya studying violation of a phonation (dysphonia).

Diseases of an ear, nose and throat accompany the person since the early childhood during all life. In the majority these diseases have inflammatory character as ENT organs are closely tied and are in continuous interaction with the environment. Mucous membranes of ENT organs contain a large number of opportunistic microorganisms which at the slightest violation of balance in an organism turn into pathogenic and lead to a disease.

Among the most widespread diseases there are nose cavities – adenoides, rhinitises, antritises, sinusitis, injuries of a nasal partition, nasal bleedings. From ear diseases otitises, timpanita, evstakhiita, damages of traumatic character often meet. Laryngitis, pharyngitises, chronic tonsillitis, etc. sharp and chronic states belong to widespread diseases of a throat. Megalopolises with their big density and bad ecology are especially favorable background for development of LOR-diseases.

Diseases of an ear, nose and throat often are complications of the postponed viral infections and develop against the background of the weakened immunity. Each of numerous diseases of ENT organs has the symptomatology and a clinical picture. Emergence of the following symptoms has to cause special vigilance: constant headaches, increase in submaxillary lymph nodes, a sore throat and in ears, deteriorations in hearing and sense of smell, difficulty of nasal breath, allocations from a nose or an ear. If after the postponed cold there are several listed symptoms at once, then it is possible to speak about the started inflammation.

Delay in treatment or self-treatment of any LOR-pathology is fraught with serious consequences for health. The disease of one of these bodies can cause complications from another. Often banal cold causes such complications as otitis or antritis. Therefore their treatment always has to be interconnected and complex. Long inflammatory processes of a nose, ear and throat can also cause damage to other bodies: hearts, kidneys, joints. Besides, the anatomic proximity to a brain and eyes, the developed innervation and blood supply of the head forces to consider LOR-diseases as one of the most serious in the development plan for life-threatening complications.

Modern methods of diagnosis of LOR-pathology include laboratory analyses, endoscopic and computer researches of a nose, throat, and ear, ultrasound, punctures of additional bosoms.

The major task in treatment of otolaryngologic diseases is prevention of transition of a disease to a chronic form. In treatment of LOR-pathology also surgical methods are used therapeutic (medicamentous, physiotherapeutic). In recent years low-invasive laser and endoscopic methods are actively applied to treatment of otolaryngologic pathology, and also methods of cosmetic and plastic surgery.
